In just six short weeks the Browne team led the development of new concepts for a multimillion dollar overhaul and expansion of the newly purchased 50 year old dorm for Simmons College, Louisville’s first HBCU. The team completed the work just in time to get students settled in for the start of band camp and classes. Morrison Hall was originally built to serve students at Spalding University and was recently purchased by Simmons for $6 million dollars. Kevin Cosby, the President of Simmons College said in a recent interview, “Twenty years ago when I started at Simmons, we had no buildings. Zero. Now we have 14.”
The money for the purchase of the new 300 student dorm came from several donations and one significant one — $1 million from former University of Louisville men’s basketball star Junior Bridgeman. Bridgeman, a strong supporter of Simmons, has also helped buy the new administration building that helped relaunch the 145-year-old school.
Working with quality responsive contractors, it was an intense six weeks and millions of dollars in rebranding improvements. Browne managed modern updates to all finishes in their lobby, multipurpose space and over 100 dorm rooms. Revitalization included new paint, new floorings, led lighting, an ADA bathroom, and new signage. It was a labor intensive job but we were up to the challenge. Simmons now has its first dorm in 100 years!
