Each year, Browne shines a spotlight on a nonprofit making an impactful difference in our communities. This year, we’re highlighting an organization with a particularly challenging mission—especially in light of the government shutdown and the ongoing threat and uncertainty surrounding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding.
Dare to Care, Louisville’s premier food bank, is working to end food insecurity at a time when families are finding it increasingly difficult to rely on the federal government. The organization partners with hundreds of local organizations, such as food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens to distribute millions of pounds of food annually. In addition, it runs unique programs for children, such as the Kids Cafe, which offers free evening meals and enrichment activities.
Dare to Care was founded in 1969 in direct response to a child’s death from malnutrition, with a mission to ensure everyone in the community has access to nutritious food. While many food assistance programs rely heavily on processed foods, Dare to Care runs a 15,000-square-foot commercial kitchen that prepares fresh meals from locally sourced ingredients. Their model focuses on creating hot meals and reducing food waste. They transport and distribute millions of pounds of food to families and individuals throughout the region. In addition, Dare to Care actively studies the specific challenges of food insecurity, such as transportation issues, to develop strategies for reaching those in need.
Browne is leading a project that will provide a new 120,000 sq. ft. food distribution warehouse. This addition will triple their refrigerated storage space and allow them to provide even more fresh food to the community. If you’d like to support the important work that Dare to Care does, we encourage you to learn more about this vital community resource on their website.
